Let's play doctor ... part I

Our latest random adventure started ....

In the ER (in Castle Rock)

not sure why she had a problem with me doing a photog shoot in the moment ..

Day #1 -

Hayley "mom ... thinkin' I have a UTI .."
me      "I'm really busy tomorrow so get in the car - we are going to the ER to take care of this PRONTO"
Doctor "yup ... UTI ... here's your antibiotic.  Be on your way"

We were in and out in about 30 min.  Thank you ... efficient ... meds started.  Relief.

Day #3 "Um .. mom ... I don't feel good.  And my throat hurts to swallow.  And look at all these rashes on my body"

Back in the car.  Back to the ER.  Allergic reaction.  Hooked up to fluids, steroids .. and a different antibiotic.

Relief.  Kinda ....

This is what I do .. while she gets the IV done .. blood drawn ... tap tap tap ... sorry kid - mom can't hold your hand.  Or she'll be on the floor.

Day #4
"mom ... like seriously .. it hurts to swallow.  Like even water.  Really hurts."
me "you'll be better tomorrow .. toughen up"

Day #5
"no really mom.  You don't get this.  I CAN NOT swallow.  And now it's even hard to breathe.                Wow .. my chest hurts so bad.  So bad.  I'm so thirsty..  I can't even drink water... it hurts so bad"

Back in the car.  Back to the ER.  More fluid.  Off all meds.  Some pain medication.  Oh your throat hurts?  You're probably constipated (that's clearly the first thing that pops into my head).. so here's a GALLON of stuff to clean you out.  Make sure to drink that all day tomorrow.

Um.  Okay?

Day #6
me "Hayley you HAVE to drink this.  HAVE to.  Dr. said so"
Hayley laying non responsive in bed.  Shake her.  "DRINK THIS"
Hayley "what aren't you understanding?  I honestly can't drink anything.  Anything.  It won't    go down.  I can't mom"

Day goes on ... try to get her to drink.  Nothing to eat since Tuesday.  Eating was out of the question.  No .. I'm not understanding why she can't get a Tablespoon of liquid down.  Nothing.  I'm frustrated.  And worried.  But do I take her back to the ER?  For what ... to tell them once again she can't eat or drink.  More fluid and send us home again?

That night .. I sleep with her.  Worried.  Still not a drop of liquid down. Nothing.  Now running a fever.  Something's wrong.  Dry.  She keeps saying she's so thirsty..

by now we've got a small pharmacy stocked in the kitchen ...

Day #7 ...

Continuation of day #6.  But worse.  And worse.  Until I almost carry her to the car.  She's so weak.  Keeps saying how thirsty she is.  Rush to a DIFFERENT ER.

Before I could fill out paperwork .. they have her hooked up to an IV wide open.  Temp is 102.  Heart rate at 150 .. EKG going ...

Now I'm starting to freak out.  Was there no more than 10 minutes ... and dr. says she's being admitted.

They put us in a room.  Pumped 6 bags of fluid that night in her before she even peed.

Pain meds immediately pumped in.
For the first time I see her body relax and excruciating pain eases.

She says to me "hey .. mom ... I think I'm a kangaroo"
me "huh?"        "yeah .. my butt .. it's so strong"
me "huh?"        "and I have a pouch.  Like a kangaroo.  Yeah.  I do"
me "close your eyes Hayley"

To ... be .... continued ...
