1/2 Marathon

August 8, 2009

Yup, I did it. Ran my first 1/2 marathon. 13.1 miles. No potty breaks for me. Nope, no walking either. Ran the whole thing. 2 hours 3 minutes.

It's funny .. this is my first race I have ever done. Why start with a 5K right? Just go for a hard one right away.

The race itself was from Georgetown to Idaho Springs. It was such a nice race. Started out at around 55 degrees but must have been close to 70 when I finished. Beautiful scenery. Fascinating people all around me.

I have to say I enjoyed most of the run. I began to feel my muscles wanting to give out around the 10 mile mark. I would set my sights on a runner ahead of me and make it my goal to pass them. I kept doing this until I caught up with "angel runner #642". We ran in unison for about 1/2 mile until we realized we weren't passing each other. She was my lifesaver for the last 3 miles. We didn't speak a word (like I could if I wanted) but it was quite obvious we were running together at that point. As we passed the finish line together ... we looked at each other with the biggest grins. She thanked me before I could get the words out myself.

I will do it again. I have already started looking for runs I can do in Sept. What the heck right? I've already been training.

My body is still in recovery mode. That day I felt great but the next day I woke up with my legs not wanting to go downstairs. At 5 days later .. they are still resisting stairs.

My toes show the outward beating my body has taken...

Honestly, I can't wait to do it again.

I LOVE RUNNING!!

"Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle - when the sun comes up, you'd better be running."
