In days past

Jackson came inside today, cheeks with just a hint of red from the October air. His eyes were gleaming .. almost like you could hear them laugh. Can eyes really smile? I saw it today.

He explained that they had been outside playing and how they made up this 'game'. The person who is "it" counted to 40 and the rest started to run around the block. After "it" counted to 40, he could start running to chase the others. You could run the opposite way and meet them on their way back around. The last one caught was the next "it".

The game was just a glorified version of the classic game of 'chase'. Is there anyone on the planet who hasn't played a game a chase?

It instantly took me back to when I was a little girl. Did my eyes laugh when I played chase? I wish I could go back to those days ... of running, playing, hiding, chasing ... a carefree life. That has to be one of the most exhilarating feelings .. the ultimate thrill of the chase.

I had suggested that we all go to Elitches earlier in the day and no one took the bait. In fact, it was Jackson who really didn't want to go.

I see why. I am so glad I see why. I am so grateful that my little boy can have more fun in made up childhood games than in manufactured, metal, pay-as-you-go fun.

Today I am grateful for my boys. For their innocence. For make believe. For running out of pure joy. Out of breath from laughing. For their love of the outdoors and the wide open possibilities it possesses.

If I were 10 again, in pig tails ... I would want to be their best friend.

Love this guy...like he was my own! I had to laugh the other day cause Ryan started to tell me "how hard his life is, so hard I would never even know" Maybe I give him too many chores. And he is only seven...something is so wrong with this picture...maybe hanging around your kids more will help him see the blessing of being a kid!!
