XC

Jackson wanted to run cross country this year in middle school.

He didn't have to ask me twice to sign him up for that.

This kid has a wild competitive streak .. which I absolutely LOVE.  Bring it boy.  You wanna run?  Well .. you better kick a** and place.

So cross country it was.  He did better than I expected and I'm pretty sure better than he guessed he could.

The first race was nerve racking for me.  I had no idea what to expect.  There were about 80 kids in his heat.  He was nervous.  I couldn't watch.  Not a clue how fast .. or slow .. or average ... or good he could be.

I waited at the finish.  And to his surprise and mine he came in 4th.  I gave him a high five and saved the hug for later.  I was so proud of him.  It was cool to watch.  It gave him the confidence to boost him throughout the season.  He consistently crossed the finish in 2nd or 3rd.  Each race I actually felt sick before he started. It was fun watching for him at the end.  Seeing if he would round the corner up front.  He didn't disappoint.

By the end of the season he was tired of running.  Understandably.  At the last meet .. districts .. he looked at me and said "I hate running" ... I asked why and he looked at me like I had three heads.. "because it hurts."  Oh.

Great season.  Fun as a parent to watch my kid do something and do it well.  Am thinking I will continue to encourage this running thing.

Run Jackson, run!!

That's really awesome that he is so good at it. If he hated it by the end of the season then he may be slightly burned out, but if he takes a break for awhile he'll probably want to run again later. I ran in elementary school, skipped sports altogether throughout middle school, and then ran again in high school. Middle school was just a rough time in general. You must be super proud!
